Cranes and Lifts

RACO ELECTRIC ACTUATORS® FOR CRANES AND LIFTS - PRECISION AND SPEED UNDER THE TOUGHEST CONDITIONS.

The task of crane systems is to pick up loads safely, position them precisely, and set them down gently. The challenge is to complete these tasks in a short time so that the output quantity is maximized and your process can become even more profitable. The design of drive systems for crane applications therefore requires a great deal of expertise and experience.

RACO has specialized in these two aspects in order to guarantee maximum reliability and safety in extreme situations:

  • Availability under the most adverse environmental conditions
  • Precise, (de)centralized control

Snow, ice, water, wind, and sun - crane systems are intensively and directly exposed to the elements. RACO Electric Actuators® have proven themselves in numerous harbor and process crane systems.

Rope Infeed

Electromechanical drive solutions for efficient container handling in harbor crane systems require precision, speed, and safety. RACO offers reliable drive technology that contributes to increased efficiency through automation and freedom from maintenance. Compared to hydraulic solutions, RACO's electromechanical drives are more cost-effective and energy-efficient.

RACO drives ensure high positioning and control accuracy, even under extreme weather conditions. They fulfill the standards for corrosion protection and offer various options to increase functional and operational reliability. Control with the RACOmatic® enables a smooth start-up, even in challenging environments.

Typical areas of application include:

  • Head-block adjustment for positioning the crane gear above the container; "side shift actuator" & "micro-motion actuator"
  • Alignment of the rope system on the head-block above the spreader; "trim list actuator"
  • Actuation of the flipper arms as a positioning aid for the spreader on the container
  • Locking of trolley and crane trolley as storm protection
  • Gear changeover of large cable winches for adjustable lifting speeds

Storm Bolt Locking System

Gantry crane systems are mainly used in inland and deep-sea harbors to enable fast container handling from ship to land and vice versa. To prevent uncontrolled crane movements in the event of storms or hurricanes, both the crane trolley and the trolley are locked to the hoist by means of safety bolts (storm bolts). Electric actuators are used for this linear movement. As the electric actuators are mainly used outdoors, usually in a salty sea air atmosphere, RACO offers special corrosion protection packages.

Gripper Actuation in Crane Systems

Crane systems are equipped with customized load handling attachments to pick up special loads. A distinction is made between form-fit and force-fit grippers.

For lifting cylindrical objects, for example, electric actuators are usually used to feed a positive load handling attachment that "wraps around" the component. An additional limitation of the maximum force of the electric actuator provides protection against damage.

The following options are available for limiting the actuating force of RACO® Electric Actuators:

  • Electronic cut-off by motor current detection; realized by the RACO EWS 100
  • Electronic cut-off by power limitation; realized by the RACOmatic® in configuration D "force controlled"

RACO electric actuator can also be used to safely adjust the mould set on traverses and lock components on load handling attachments.

Process / Overhead Cranes

RACO offers customized drives for locking and gripping for process cranes used as production equipment in the paper industry, the aircraft industry, in steel production, finishing and processing, or in the assembly of wind turbines. This is our contribution to maximizing efficiency, availability, and safety for your systems.
